Métis is a term used to describe a people with both European and Aboriginal decent that have developed a unique way of life because of the union of these two very distinct cultures. In the early 1600's it was common for European French men, (that were fur trading with the natives in Acadia) and Native women to marry and have offspring that were to be called Metissage (mixed breed) by the current catholic priests. These people would come to form their very own unique culture as a new people. They learned the culture of both parents. The Native and European. For most of our members it would be the Acadian and Native culture. The Métis have been practicing their unique culture and language for hundreds of years. We still (unbeknownst to some) practice our Metis culture to this day. We don't really recognize it as being Metis because the Metis tradition, to us, are a common way of life. Although we tend to practice more of the European culture because the native and Acadian culture was shamed and frowned upon in earlier times. But all is not lost! We have showed perseverance. The voyageurs and native way is still well alive in us today. For the most part we all love our traditional fiddle music and instruments. The "kitchen party" is a much enjoyed common occurrence. We fish, we hunt and trap. We sometimes travel, even moving for a season to work. Like the Voyageurs, some people still sail to, and live in fishing huts, on islands, during the fishing seasons as to be closer to the best fishing grounds. We trade our harvest of fish. No different from the Voyageurs. We hunt to provide food for our friends and families. Just like the Natives. Most of us all share common religious beliefs. We have always been a strong community. We may have always been viewed as the lower to middle class citizens, but as a community we are strong and resilient. We have many historic communities on the east coast that we can trace our ancestors to. We always know we can depend on our neighbours to bond together in times of need. Just like we are doing now, bonding together to preserve and protect our culture! We will proudly continue to do what our forefathers have taught us! With pride!

Hi Everyone,

I must say that we were floored by the attendance and level of support at the open house last week. We sincerely appreciate everyone coming out.

The public comment period for the focus report opens this Wednesday with the publication in the Guysborough Journal. Please consider sending in letters of support to our initiative to [email protected] starting Wednesday and ask your friends to do the same. It is the community support that will make this happen. Copes of the report will be linked on line and hard copies will be available at the GCIFA and MODG offices.
